My start in graphic design came when a friend asked me to create flyers and posters for a DJ event he was putting together. This was in 1992 and Aleph One was to be Kingston, Ontario's first "rave" and techno event.
These were early days for electronic music in North America - three years before the Chemical Brothers' crossover hit Exit Planet Dust was released and five years before the film Trainspotting had come out. Techno music was only known by a small number of people.
I created the flyers and posters for Aleph One using a Powerbook 100 and some early desktop layout software. Later I worked extensively with Photoshop, Illustrator, Quark and several other graphics programs. I also become very interested in design and graphics and spent a lot of time reading magazines and books as well as collecting fonts and laying out various ideas.
Included here are some of the promotional flyers for our club nights, artwork for DJ mixes, radio shows and music releases. I also created promotional materials for several artists, bands and for many other local events.
Creating flyers for these events was really fun because in the end we actually handed out many of them directly to people on campus or at other events. It was as a chance to create a message in a small compact design that you would personally deliver to someone.
