CFRC Trainer and Enrichment Studies Instructor | 1992-1998

I taught the Enrichment Studies Broadcasting course twice at CFRC. High school students from across Ontario spent five days at the studio. I planned a fun and hands-on course with lots of small projects.

Having three studios to work with meant that some of the kids could work in the studio while others could be doing some research in the music library or preparing other materials.

On the Thursday afternoon and Friday morning their final program projects were delivered 'live-to-tape.' These included call-in shows, sports programs, a number of interviews and a good variety of music shows. The second year I taught the course I was able to arrange for the shows to air on Friday afternoon. This was for the listeners on the school buses on their way home!

As a volunteer broadcaster and then later as Program Director I taught many of the training groups at CFRC. The regular training was a three month course with a final test of producing a live show heard by a tester in the studio. I also taught a number of specialized training sessions focused on production techniques and drama and spoken word programs. In addition to this I worked with the Voiceprint volunteers.

Voiceprint provided a reading service for the visually impaired that aired on cable stations across the province. Many of the volunteers were seniors who were keen but not confident. With practice they all become excellent announcers no doubt heard by many appreciative listeners.
