Program Director - CFRC-FM, Queen's Radio | 1994-1997

At CFRC I was one of three paid staff members. I was the person responsible for creating the broadcast schedule and much of the oversight of the broadcasters - their training and programs as well as the studios.

The Radio Club had at times up to 150 members. They were volunteers who had trained to do a radio show and then would apply with a program idea. Organizing these various idea into a schedule that satisfied the requirements of the CRTC concerning Canadian content, new music, non-hit music, and a general requirement of focusing on and serving alternative music and community groups was a big part of the job. New schedules were created in the fall, winter and summer.

The summer schedule was always a bit difficult as so many Queen's students would leave. Some would stay and those people who lived in Kingston, the community members part of our Radio Club, would also be around.

Training lasted about two months and was fairly rigorous. There was a testing process at the end where a trainee create a full one hour program for another trainer to listen into. Sometimes this meant having to listen to heavy metal show 8AM on Friday morning.

I really enjoyed the diversity of the CFRC Radio Club. And being a group of people who wanted to do nothing but play music and talk on the radio so people could listen to them meant that there were more then a few characters in the group.
