In 2006 I was a Digifest New Voices Selection as chosen by Telefilm Canada/The Design Exchange. My submission was the Blipvert Project - a web based system which created novel banner ads by effectively cross breeding existing Flash banner ads using XML and Python.
The system worked by collecting Flash banner ads from the web and then converting their Flash SWF code into XML. Then using Python the various elements of the banner ads were swapped with material from other banner ads - in effect a kind of cross breeding of the ads. By doing this I was able to generate new banner ads some of which did some interesting things.
Advertising and commerce have always been at odds with the open and shared philosophies at the heart of the web and the internet. The Blipvert Project addressed this balance by introducing a system which responded to the presence of marketing ads by generating new banner ads that don't sell anything. These ads are simply an experiment in aesthetics and web design.
